Planning an event and not sure which Indonesian dishes to choose?
You're not alone. Choosing Indonesian catering can feel overwhelming, especially if you're unfamiliar with the cuisine or organising food for guests with different tastes.
At Dapoer Djember, we've helped customers cater everything from office lunches and birthday celebrations to weddings and Indonesian community events. One question comes up from our customers: "Which dishes actually go well together?"
The answer isn't simply choosing the most popular dishes. Great Indonesian meals are built around balance—combining rich proteins, fresh vegetables, comforting rice, and complementary side dishes into one satisfying meal.
In this guide, we'll share our recommendations for building a well-balanced Indonesian catering menu, along with some of our customers' favourite combinations for different occasions.
Understanding The Indonesian Menu Formula
Unlike many Western meals where a single main dish takes centre stage, Indonesian meals are meant to be enjoyed as a combination of several dishes served together.
They're typically served with rice, proteins, vegetables, and side dishes—creating a meal that's both balanced and satisfying. Each dish plays a different role to create a complete dining experience.
Element | Why It Matters |
Rice/Lontong | The foundation of the meal |
Protein | The main flavour and source of satisfaction |
Vegetables | Add freshness and balance |
Side Dishes | Add texture and complementary flavour |
Rather than choosing dishes individually, we always recommend thinking about how they work together. A rich beef dish, for example, becomes much more enjoyable when paired with fresh vegetables and lighter side dishes.
How to Choose the Right Menu for Your Event
Every event is different, so the ideal menu depends on who you're serving.
Office Lunch
Office catering works best with dishes that are easy to eat, mildly seasoned, and familiar to a wide range of guests. Combining White rice, Rendang, and Sayoer Boontjes is always a good option. We often recommend serving Sambal separately so everyone can adjust the spice level to their own preference.
Birthday Parties
Birthday celebrations usually benefit from a little more variety, allowing guests to mix and match dishes while sharing the meal. A combination of crowd favourites like Rendang or Chicken Satay with colourful vegetables and side dishes creates a festive spread that's both visually appealing and satisfying.
Weddings & Large Celebrations
Buffet-friendly dishes that stay warm and offer different taste profiles are ideal for larger gatherings. A balanced combination ensures guests have plenty of choice without overwhelming the buffet. We also recommend including a mix of beef, chicken, lamb, and vegetable dishes. Therefore, there's something to suit different tastes and dietary preferences.
International Guests
For guests trying Indonesian cuisine for the first time, we recommend starting with iconic favourites such as Rendang, Satay or Opor Ayam. These dishes are rich in flavour, approachable, and represent authentic Indonesian home cooking.

Why does this combination work?
Yellow Rice (Nasi Kuning) is traditionally served during celebrations and special occasions throughout Indonesia, making it a natural choice for festive gatherings.
Rich dishes like Rendang, Semoor and Gebakken Chicken are balanced with fresh vegetables and comforting side dishes, creating the kind of home-style Indonesian meal many of our customers remember from family celebrations.
For Dutch guests, this combination also offers an authentic introduction to Indonesian cuisine without being overly spicy.

Why does this combination work?
When catering for larger groups, variety is key.
Satay is consistently one of our most requested dishes because it's familiar, easy to enjoy, and loved by both adults and children. Pairing it with fresh vegetables, pickled Acar, and lighter side dishes creates a buffet that's balanced rather than heavy.
These combinations also allow guests to mix and match different flavours, making them ideal for weddings and celebrations where everyone has different preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Indonesian food be too spicy?
Not necessarily. Many traditional Indonesian dishes are naturally mild. We maintain the taste of East Java, which is rich in flavor and tasty. We usually serve Sambal Bawang separately so guests can decide how spicy they would like their meal.
